Last night I finally managed to attend "Writers with Drinks," a monthly reading/singing/comedy variety show at the Makeout Room in the Mission. And the reason I finally managed to go was that the amazing Cat Rambo and Jay Lake were both reading. There were two great poets before them-- Camille T. Dungy was especially lovely--and a slightly painful comedic act. I'm all about dry humor, but sheesh. I was bored.
Cat, on the other hand, was not boring. She read a chapter from (I believe) a WIP about an all-female team of super heroes that was fun and entertaining. I should really get myself a copy of The Surgeon's Tale.
Jay Lake first read a short story about angels that left me stunned, the way the best of his work always does. The second story was fine, and third story he read, I couldn't even follow. This is what the not-best of his work does. Or maybe it was the below-average dark-and-stormy I'd just finished. Ugh. Not recommended at the Makeout Room.
All in all, very entertaining. I'd never seen Cat read before, and it was a treat. I hope to make it to other editions of Writers with Drinks in future too.
