First--how can there be SO MANY people in this city? At 2 in the afternoon, I had assumed the bus and grocery store would be mostly empty. Nope, not in San Francisco. At least, not in the summer.
Now, a backlog of Odyssey posts:
Nancy Kress was extraordinary. The night she arrived at St. Anselm, we had a reception, which is basically a question-and-answer period. Nancy told us how she first started writing (accidentally) and her own harshest critiques. She also told us that the novella is her favorite length to write in.
Nancy was staying the apartment right above mine, and after the reception I was showing her all our apartments and telling her how our class was notable for its enthusiasm towards drinking (okay, she saw all the liquor bottles, I had to). So she decided to hang out with us that night and even had a beer. I think I started to get more, rather than less, fangirlish.
Because Nancy was the writer-in-residence, she was here for a whole week. Her five lectures were: writing in scenes, plot, worldbuilding, style/tone, and character.
My favorite times, though, were breakfasts with Nancy. Since I'm an early riser, I got up most mornings that week and went to the cafeteria to have breakfast. That's when I really got to pick her brain--the first morning I was the only student there. Plus, I love breakfast, so I got to gorge on chocolate chip pancakes and unlimited coffee.
It was an amazing week, but being Week 5, I was fairly burnt out and coasting on fangirl glee. I'm not sure what everyone else was going on. Coffee and wine, I believe.
